Montalcino Laneway

Oil on Cradled Panel, framed 23" x 45" Sold

My wife and I had just arrived in Montalcino and she asked if I wanted to go for a short walk around before we met up with our travelling companions for a drink. We started down this steep laneway that continued to take us out of town and down the Tuscan countryside.
It was such a beautiful stroll, the scenery was spectacular and we keep going down this road passing vineyard after vineyard.
Following behind my wife (as I usually am) taking photos, I realized that this wasn’t going to be a short walk anymore and that there was a lot of very steep uphill walking to get back to our hotel in town. “No problem she said, I checked this route before we left and there’s a shortcut back”.
We finally reached another smaller dirt road that was the trail back into town, however after a few minutes it started to veer into a wooded area where we eventually came to a small gate with a hand written sign, in Italian of course. Sandi was one legging over the gate when I got out the phone and Google translated. “Trail closed due to wild boars in the area”. I still had to talk her out of going ahead, I didn’t think wild boars were anything we wanted to run into. We turned around and started the steep, long, hot hike back into town and eventually showed up in the bar very hot, flustered and red faced and apologized to our waiting friends.
I’ve since learned not to trust Sandi when she mentions a short walk but will concede that it was probably one of the best “short walks” I’ve ever done.
