This boat was near our little casita in El Sargento Baja Mexico, where we stayed in February 2024. I walked by it everyday lugging my wing-foiling gear down to the beach. For the most part it was secluded in the shade but for a brief time in the late afternoon the sun would throw a little light on it, pulling it out of the shadows. The gouache sketch was done on an overcast day but for the larger painting I wanted that dappled light. This painting stayed on my easel for a long time. I’d pick away at it, getting bogged down in the vegetation- trying to build up a depth and texture without over rendering. Challenging but I'm happy with the finished result.
