Starrigans by Stuart Godfrey, Oil, 19 x 33

Starrigans

Oil on panel, framed 19" x 33" Sold

Framed with handcrafted floater frame.

As a young boy I was introduced to the Newfoundland artist Gerald Squires at his home in Ferryland. His home, where he lived with his wife and kids, was the actual lighthouse in Ferryland. I was probably 11 at the time and meeting a “real artist” and sitting in his studio amongst his paintings had a profound influence on me. “Starrigan” is a Newfoundland term for an old, weathered, gnarled twisted evergreen tree or stump. No shortage of those on the east coast of Newfoundland and Gerald Squires painted many of them.
